Creator: Bella Weems

Product type: MLM (multilevel marketing) company selling custom jewelry

Price: $49, $99 or $199 jewelry kit, to become a distributor

Scam / Legit? : Legit

Recommended or not? : NOT recommended

Origami Owl Jewelry is an MLM company that sells unique, custom-made jewelry. The price for each trinket may be low, but assembling a locket can cost anywhere from $60 to more than $100, depending on how many items you include.

There is a good focus on retail commission in its compensation plan, but its income statement paints a bleak outlook for its distributors. Coupled with poor quality products and bad customer service, I cannot recommend Origami Owl as a business opportunity.

If you are interested in the jewelry niche, there are various business models you can consider apart from MLMs. Click on the button below to learn more:

What is Origami Owl Jewelry

Let’s start off with some history and background of this MLM (multilevel marketing) company.

A brief background of Origami Owl Jewelry

It all began with Bella Weems when she was 14 years old, who had a dream of owning a car when she turned 16. With her savings of $350, and the loving support of family and friends, she was able to build up an empire selling personalised keepsake jewelry.

Origami Owl Product Line

Apart from the usual necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, chains, watches and other accessories, the unique selling point of Origami Owl Custom Jewelry (also known as O2) is its Living Lockets, which allow you to assemble your choice of trinkets and charms that tell your very own life story.

I am very impressed and in love with the concept here, and was looking through the charms and trinkets that would speak to me, with the only thing stopping me from buying being the tons of complaints about their quality.

We will examine those in the later section. For now, let’s focus on O2’s product line.

A charm typically costs $6 to $7, but it can go up to $12 for some designs. The selection is huge, and I’m guessing it would take at least 5 to 8 of those charms to tell your own story, so these little trinkets can quickly add up in terms of cost.

Apart from the charms, the lockets and chains are sold separately, with lockets costing between $28 to $58, and chains costing between $12 to $48.

Origami Owl Product Quality and Feedback

From the looks of the sheer number of complaints about the quality of the jewelry and the customer service all over the internet, it seems that the reputation of O2 has not been kept up to standard.

I definitely wouldn’t want to buy such expensive jewelry that breaks so easily.

The lack of work ethics of the customer service of Origami Owl is also very telling of how much they value their customers and distributors.

These are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to feedback from unhappy customers and distributors.

Origami Owl Jewelry Business Opportunity

To earn from the business opportunity accorded by O2, you have to first become their distributor, which they call ‘designer’.

How to become an Origami Owl Designer

There are 3 jewelry kits that you can choose from, to get yourself signed up as a designer:

$49 On the Go Kit, worth $155 in retail value.
$99 DIY Kit, worth $394 in retail value.
$199 DIY Kit, worth $637 in retail value.

With this, you are all set to start earning with Origami Owl Jewelry.

How to make money with Origami Owl

Just as with any other MLM opportunity, there are two main ways to earn with O2: by making sales to earn retail commission, or by recruiting and building a team to earn residual commission and other bonuses.

Retail commission

Once you become an Origami Owl designer, you can start earning by making sales. The commission ranges from 30% to 50% of the commissionable volume (CV), depending on the actual products purchased by your customers.

The beauty of this compensation plan is that you do not have to meet any minimum monthly requirement to earn as a new designer.

The requirements for sales quota, number of personally sponsored designers, team volume, etc. will enter the equation only as you advance up the ranks.

I think this is the fairest way to reward distributors, simply based on the amount of sales they bring to the company.

Recruitment commission

This requires you to recruit people into the business, forming part of your team. You will be able to earn residual commissions as your team builds up, and you advance through the ranks.

Personally, I do not like the recruitment aspect of MLMs, because it feels exploitative. Especially if the distributor were not even making profits yet to begin with, how could she convince others to join the business opportunity without creating some hype that is misleading?

Moreover, the recruitment part of the compensation plan tends to pass the big bucks up to those high up in the ranks, leaving the junior distributors with very little earnings to show, for all the effort they put into recruiting people into the company.

Lastly, the drop off rate for MLMs tend to be very high, such is the nature of companies running this business model. This means you have to keep on recruiting tirelessly to maintain the size of your team and your rank.

Why Origami Owl may or may not work for you

If only the lockets were of better quality and more durable, then I would definitely recommend getting into this business and focusing on selling the products. Even if you remain at the designer level all the way without advancing through the ranks, if you know how to leverage on internet marketing, this can be a profitable venture.

With that said, I’m sure different people have different experiences with the product quality and customer service.

If yours had been a positive one, and you want to go all out to promote Origami Owl Jewelry, then let me show you how to get massive amounts of free organic traffic to the replicated website given to you by O2.

You see, no one will land on your replicated website if you do not actively send traffic to it. And since it is a duplicate site that all Origami Owl designers will get, it is never going to rank on the search engines when people do a search.

However, if you have some means to show up when this group of potential buyers are doing their research on lockets, charms, customised gifts and stuff like that, then you can provide the answers and solutions to them, and finally direct them to your replicate website.

See how you can increase your Origami Owl Jewelry sales with free search engines traffic:

However, if you have already experienced for yourself the poor quality of O2 jewelry or been frustrated with their customer service, there are many other ways to remain in the jewelry niche without relying on any MLM company.

I have detailed some of the alternative business models in another post:

Pros of Origami Owl Jewelry

1. Very unique concept in an evergreen niche

A locket full of your life story and memories that you can carry with you wherever you go. This is such a beautiful concept. I was almost bought over, if not for reading all the negative reviews about how the glass would drop off and all the charms fall out.

2. Compensation plan that gives adequate focus on retail commission

This reflects the company’s core business in selling jewelry products and genuinely adding value, instead of making its distributors become its sole customers, like what many other MLM companies are doing.

3. No monthly purchases or minimum sales requirements

Not having to meet any monthly requirements truly lifts the pressure off Origami Owl designers.

Cons of Origami Owl Jewelry

1. Exorbitant pricing

Even though $6 to $7 per charm might seem like a low cost, such trinkets can in fact be bought elsewhere at much lower prices, in the range of $1 to $2.

This makes the Origami Owl products seem like not so worthwhile.

2. Poor quality

There is no excuse for not being able to deliver quality products, since it is the core business of O2. I have a feeling they will do so much better if they could only do something to improve on their lockets quality.

3. Poor customer service

It is a shame that Origami Owl’s customer service department has given the company such a bad name. This is another aspect of their business that they really should work on.

4. Most distributors do not make money

Numbers do not lie. Just take a look at this income statement from Origami Owl themselves, for the year 2018.

origami owl income statement

92% of their active designers make an annual average income of $233. How is that profitable? I cannot survive on this for one month, let alone one year.

Even the team leaders are making an annual average of only $2.7K. This must have been after hours and hours of hard work trying to sell the jewelry items, as well as to build their teams.

This may shock you, but it is the naked truth. It is precisely what MLM compensation plans are structured to achieve.

Is Origami Owl Custom Jewelry Scam or legit?

Origami Owl Jewelry is definitely a legitimate MLM company, with real products to sell. Its compensation plan is a good one that can work even for designers who are just starting out.

Other MLM companies in the jewelry niche include Paparazzi, Rockhill Designs, and Vantel Pearls, to name just a few.

Recommendation

My recommendation would depend on your decision.

If you would like to continue or start giving Origami Owl a shot, then I suggest you learn to leverage on the free traffic source from search engines which, if done correctly, will drive massive amounts of sales to your O2 business.
